This vulnerability affects the function UniversalBrowserRead of the component JavaScript. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer coercion vulnerability. Mozilla Firefox before 1.5.0.5, Thunderbird before 1.5.0.5, and SeaMonkey before 1.0.3 allows scripts with the UniversalBrowserRead privilege to gain UniversalXPConnect privileges and possibly execute code or obtain sensitive data by reading into a privileged context.
The weakness was shared 07/25/2006 by Benjamin Smedberg (shutdown) with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative as MFSA2006-53 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-3809 since 07/24/2006. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22162 (CentOS 3 : seamonkey (CESA-2006:0608)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117672 (CentOS Security Update for SeaMonkey (CESA-2006:0608)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4326.
