A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mozilla Firefox 1.5/1.5.0.1/1.5.0.2/1.5.0.3/1.5.0.4 (Web Browser). This issue affects the function XPCNativeWrapper of the component JavaScript. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer coercion vulnerability. The weakness was published 07/25/2006 by Benjamin Smedberg (shutdown) with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative as MFSA2006-54 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-3810 since 07/24/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22162 (CentOS 3 : seamonkey (CESA-2006:0608)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117672 (CentOS Security Update for SeaMonkey (CESA-2006:0608)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4326.
