Mozilla Firefox 1.5 jsfun.c memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 1.5 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the file jsfun.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The function allocation code (js_NewFunction in jsfun.c) in Firefox 1.5 allows attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption) and possibly execute arbitrary code via user-defined methods that trigger garbage collection in a way that operates on freed objects.

The bug was discovered 02/01/2006. The weakness was disclosed 02/02/2006 by Johnny Stenback (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers as Bug 322045 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-0293 since 01/18/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in Perl Module. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22586 (Debian DSA-1044-1 : mozilla-firefox - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115324 (Multiple Mozilla Products Memory Corruption/Code Injection/Access Restriction Bypass Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9037.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (24430), Tenable (22586), SecurityFocus (BID 16476†), OSVDB (22890†) and Secunia (SA18700†). The entries VDB-2026, VDB-2022, VDB-2024 and VDB-2025 are pretty similar. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
