A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.5 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown part. Mozilla Firefox before 1.5.0.1, Thunderbird 1.5 if running Javascript in mail, and SeaMonkey before 1.0 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by changing an element s style from position:relative to position:static, which causes Gecko to operate on freed memory.
The bug was discovered 02/01/2006. The weakness was presented 02/02/2006 by Johnny Stenback (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers as Bug 317934 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-0294. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 1.5.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9037.
