Details
A vulnerability was found in Mozilla SeaMonkey 1.0 (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Mozilla Firefox 1.5, Thunderbird 1.5 if Javascript is enabled in mail, and SeaMonkey before 1.0 might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via the QueryInterface method of the built-in Location and Navigator objects, which leads to memory corruption.
The bug was discovered 02/01/2006. The weakness was shared 02/01/2006 by Georgi Guninski (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-0295 since 01/18/2006. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl Module and been published 5 hours after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at metasploit.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20842 (Firefox < 1.5.0.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115324 (Multiple Mozilla Products Memory Corruption/Code Injection/Access Restriction Bypass Vulnerabilities).
