A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mozilla Thunderbird up to 1.5 (Mail Client Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown function. Integer overflow in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 1.x before 1.5 and 1.0.x before 1.0.8, Mozilla Suite before 1.7.13, and SeaMonkey before 1.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary bytecode via JavaScript with a large regular expression.

The bug was discovered 04/13/2006. The weakness was released 04/14/2006 by Georgi Guninski (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-1737 since 04/12/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21993 (CentOS 4 : firefox (CESA-2006:0328)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117722 (CentOS Security Update for Firefox (CESA-2006:0328)).

Upgrading to version 1.x eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3977.
