Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird up to 1.5.0.3 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird up to 1.5.0.3 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer overflow in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird before 1.5.0.4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via "jsstr tagify," which leads to memory corruption.

The weakness was disclosed 06/02/2006 by Mikolaj J. Habryn (moz_bug_r_a4) with Cybozu Labs (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-2780 since 06/02/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22163 (CentOS 4 : seamonkey (CESA-2006:0609)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156230 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Firefox (ELSA-2006:0733,ELSA-2006:0675,ELSA-2006:0610)).

Upgrading to version 1.5.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4656.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (26843), Tenable (22163), SecurityFocus (BID 18228†), OSVDB (26301†) and Secunia (SA27216†). The entries VDB-2174, VDB-2283, VDB-2285 and VDB-2282 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
