A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5.0.3 (Mail Client Software). It has been declared as critical. Double free vulnerability in nsVCard.cpp in Mozilla Thunderbird before 1.5.0.4 and SeaMonkey before 1.0.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (hang) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a VCard that contains invalid base64 characters.
The bug was discovered 06/01/2006. The weakness was presented 06/02/2006 by Mikolaj J. Habryn (moz_bug_r_a4) with Cybozu Labs (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-2781 since 06/02/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27434 (openSUSE 10 Security Update : seamonkey (seamonkey-1671)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156232 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Thunderbird (ELSA-2006:0735,ELSA-2006:0677,ELSA-2006:0624,ELSA-2006:0611)).
Upgrading to version 1.5.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4656.
