Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5/1.5.0.2/1.5.0.4 heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5/1.5.0.2/1.5.0.4 (Mail Client Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

Heap-based buffer overflow in Mozilla Thunderbird before 1.5.0.5 and SeaMonkey before 1.0.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a VCard attachment with a malformed base64 field, which copies more data than expected due to an integer underflow.

The bug was discovered 07/26/2006. The weakness was presented 07/27/2006 by Benjamin Smedberg (moz_bug_r_a4) with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-3804 since 07/24/2006. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22162 (CentOS 3 : seamonkey (CESA-2006:0608)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117663 (CentOS Security Update for Thunderbird (CESA-2006:0611)).

Upgrading to version 1.5.0.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4326.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (27985), Tenable (22162), SecurityFocus (BID 19181†), OSVDB (27563†) and Secunia (SA21228†).
