A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 1.5/1.5.0.1/1.5.0.2/1.5.0.3/1.5.0.4 (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function "string of the component Javascript Engine. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Multiple integer overflows in the Javascript engine in Mozilla Firefox before 1.5.0.5, Thunderbird before 1.5.0.5, and SeaMonkey before 1.0.3 might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors involving (1) long strings in the toSource method of the Object, Array, and String objects; and (2) unspecified "string function arguments."
The weakness was shared 07/27/2006 by Benjamin Smedberg (moz_bug_r_a4) with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-3806 since 07/24/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22162 (CentOS 3 : seamonkey (CESA-2006:0608)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117662 (CentOS Security Update for Firefox (CESA-2006:0610)).
Upgrading to version 1.5.0.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4326.
