A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Excel 2000/2002/2003/2007 (Spreadsheet Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown part of the component Version Information Handler. Microsoft Excel 2000 SP3, 2002 SP3, 2003 SP2, 2003 Viewer, and Office Excel 2007 does not properly validate version information, which allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Excel file, aka "Calculation Error Vulnerability".
The weakness was shared 07/10/2007 with Microsoft as MS07-036 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-1756 since 03/29/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25687 (MS07-036: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Excel Could Allow Remote Code Execution (936542)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110062 (Microsoft Excel Could Allow Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS07-036)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS07-036 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12070. In this case the pattern |09 08 10 00| is used for detection.
