A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Excel 2000/2002/2003/2004/2007 (Spreadsheet Software). This issue affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Microsoft Excel 2000 SP3, 2002 SP3, 2003 SP2, and 2003 Viewer allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a malformed Excel file involving the "denoting [of] the start of a Workspace designation", which results in memory corruption, aka the "Workbook Memory Corruption Vulnerability".

The bug was discovered 07/10/2007. The weakness was shared 07/10/2007 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-3030 since 06/05/2007. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50052 (MS07-036: Vulnerability in Microsoft Excel Could Allow Remote Code Execution (936542) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110062 (Microsoft Excel Could Allow Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS07-036)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12184. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5452.
