A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Excel 2000/2002/2003/2007 (Spreadsheet Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Active Worksheet Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Microsoft Excel 2000 SP3, 2002 SP3, 2003 SP2, 2003 Viewer, and Office Excel 2007 does not properly validate version information, which allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Excel file, aka "Calculation Error Vulnerability".
The weakness was published 07/10/2007 with Microsoft as MS07-036 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-1756 since 03/29/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS07-036 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
