Unspecified vulnerability in Microsoft Excel 2002 SP3 and 2003 SP2 allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a malformed Excel file containing multiple active worksheets, which results in memory corruption.
The bug was discovered 07/10/2007. The weakness was presented 07/10/2007 by sehato (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-3029 since 06/05/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25687 (MS07-036: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Excel Could Allow Remote Code Execution (936542)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110062 (Microsoft Excel Could Allow Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS07-036)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12099. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5453.
