A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apple Quicktime 7.1.3 (Multimedia Player Software). This vulnerability affects the function internalunpackbits. The InternalUnpackBits function in Apple QuickDraw, as used by Quicktime 7.1.3 and other applications on Mac OS X 10.4.8 and earlier, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted PICT file that triggers memory corruption in the _GetSrcBits32ARGB function. NOTE: this issue might overlap CVE-2007-0462.
The bug was discovered 01/24/2007. The weakness was shared 01/24/2007 by Tom Ferris and Mike Price as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-0588 since 01/30/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
