Details
A vulnerability has been found in Adobe Flash Player up to 9.0.115.0 (Multimedia Player Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component DNS. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in Perl-Compatible Regular Expression (PCRE) library before 7.3 allows context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via a singleton Unicode sequence in a character class in a regex pattern, which is incorrectly optimized.
The bug was discovered 11/05/2007. The weakness was presented 12/27/2007 by Dan Boneh, Adam Barth, Andrew Bortz and Collin Jackso (Paul) with Stanford University (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at adobe.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-4768 since 09/10/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40711 (RHEL 3 / 4 / 5 : flash-plugin (RHSA-2007:1126)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115679 (Adobe Flash Player Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB07-20)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at adobe.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38278), Tenable (40711), SecurityFocus (BID 27641†), OSVDB (40766†) and Secunia (SA30840†).
