Microsoft Office Excel 2000 SP3, 2002 SP3, 2003 SP2 and SP3, and 2007 Gold and SP1; Office Excel Viewer 2003 Gold and SP3; Office Excel Viewer; Office Compatibility Pack 2007 Gold and SP1; Office SharePoint Server 2007 Gold and SP1; and Office 2004 and 2008 for Mac do not properly parse Country record values when loading Excel files, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Excel file, aka the "Excel Record Parsing Vulnerability."

The bug was discovered 08/12/2008. The weakness was shared 08/12/2008 by TippingPoint with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-3006 since 07/07/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50058 (MS08-043 / MS08-051: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Could Allow Remote Code Execution (954066 / 949785) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110084 (Microsoft Excel Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS08-043)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6296.
