The layout engine in Mozilla Firefox 3.x before 3.0.4, Thunderbird 2.x before 2.0.0.18, and SeaMonkey 1.x before 1.1.13 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via multiple vectors that trigger an assertion failure or other consequences.
The bug was discovered 11/12/2008. The weakness was released 11/13/2008 by Georgi Guninski (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-5016 since 11/10/2008. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

Upgrading to version 1.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6618.
