A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser). Affected is an unknown code block of the component Same Origin Policy. The session restore feature in Mozilla Firefox 3.x before 3.0.4 and 2.x before 2.0.0.18 allows remote attackers to violate the same origin policy to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks and execute arbitrary JavaScript with chrome privileges via unknown vectors.
The bug was discovered 11/12/2008. The weakness was shared 11/13/2008 by Georgi Guninski (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-5019 since 11/10/2008. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 36485 (CentOS 3 / 4 : seamonkey (CESA-2008:0977)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 2.0.0.8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6618.
