A vulnerability was found in McAfee Email and Web Security 5.5/5.6/7.0 (Anti-Malware Software). It has been classified as critical. McAfee Email and Web Security (EWS) 5.x before 5.5 Patch 6 and 5.6 before Patch 3, and McAfee Email Gateway (MEG) 7.0 before Patch 1, does not disable the server-side session token upon the closing of the Management Console/Dashboard, which makes it easier for remote attackers to hijack sessions by capturing a session cookie and then modifying the response to a login attempt, related to a "Logout Failure" issue.

The weakness was disclosed 03/15/2012 by Ben Williams with NGS Secure Research (Website). The advisory is shared at kc.mcafee.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with McAfee. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-4581 since 08/22/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept.

Upgrading to version 5.5 Patch 6, 5.6 Patch 3, 7.0 Patch 1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
