A vulnerability was found in FreePBX 2.9. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the file /flash/mypage.php. Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in FreePBX 2.9 and earlier allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the (1) context parameter to panel/index_amp.php or (2) panel/dhtml/index.php; (3) clid or (4) clidname parameters to panel/flash/mypage.php; (5) PATH_INFO to admin/views/freepbx_reload.php; or (6) login parameter to recordings/index.php.
The weakness was presented 03/22/2012 by Martin Tschirsich with Technische Universität Darmstadt as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at archives.neohapsis.com. The vendor was not involved in the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-4870 since 09/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by Martin Tschirsich and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at archives.neohapsis.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 282 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:flash/mypage.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
Applying the patch Unofficial Patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at archives.neohapsis.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
