A vulnerability was found in FreePBX 2.9. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the file /dhtml/index.php. The manipulation of the argument context with the input value /../%00">[XSS] leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-79. Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in FreePBX 2.9 and earlier allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the (1) context parameter to panel/index_amp.php or (2) panel/dhtml/index.php; (3) clid or (4) clidname parameters to panel/flash/mypage.php; (5) PATH_INFO to admin/views/freepbx_reload.php; or (6) login parameter to recordings/index.php.
The weakness was shared 03/22/2012 by Martin Tschirsich with Technische Universität Darmstadt as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared for download at archives.neohapsis.com. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-4870 since 09/06/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
A public exploit has been developed by Martin Tschirsich and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at archives.neohapsis.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 282 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:dhtml/index.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
Applying the patch Unofficial Patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at archives.neohapsis.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
