A vulnerability classified as critical was found in FreePBX 2.9. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the file /recordings/index.php. The manipulation of the argument login with the input value '>[XSS] leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-79. Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in FreePBX 2.9 and earlier allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the (1) context parameter to panel/index_amp.php or (2) panel/dhtml/index.php; (3) clid or (4) clidname parameters to panel/flash/mypage.php; (5) PATH_INFO to admin/views/freepbx_reload.php; or (6) login parameter to recordings/index.php.
The weakness was released 03/22/2012 by Martin Tschirsich with Technische Universität Darmstadt as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is available at archives.neohapsis.com. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-4870 since 09/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed by Martin Tschirsich and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at archives.neohapsis.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 282 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:recordings/index.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
