A vulnerability was found in FreePBX 2.9. It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown functionality of the file /index_amp.php. Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in FreePBX 2.9 and earlier allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the (1) context parameter to panel/index_amp.php or (2) panel/dhtml/index.php; (3) clid or (4) clidname parameters to panel/flash/mypage.php; (5) PATH_INFO to admin/views/freepbx_reload.php; or (6) login parameter to recordings/index.php.
The weakness was disclosed 03/22/2012 by Martin Tschirsich with Technische Universität Darmstadt as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is available at archives.neohapsis.com. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-4870 since 09/06/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed by Martin Tschirsich and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at archives.neohapsis.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 282 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:index_amp.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
Applying the patch Unofficial Patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at archives.neohapsis.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
