The weakness was presented 04/10/2012 by Jose Antonio Vazquez Gonzalez with VeriSign iDefense Labs as MS12-023 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-0170 since 12/13/2011. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58655 (MS12-023: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2675157)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100113 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS12-023)).
Applying the patch MS12-023 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12229.
