A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/7/8 (Web Browser) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component VML. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 through 8 does not properly handle objects in memory, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by accessing a deleted object, aka "VML Style Remote Code Execution Vulnerability."
The weakness was published 04/10/2012 with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as MS12-023 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0172 since 12/13/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58655 (MS12-023: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2675157)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100113 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS12-023)).
Applying the patch MS12-023 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12230.
