A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/7/8/9 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component SelectAll Handler. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 through 9 does not properly handle objects in memory, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by accessing a deleted object, aka "SelectAll Remote Code Execution Vulnerability."
The weakness was shared 04/10/2012 with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as MS12-023 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0171 since 12/13/2011. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58655 (MS12-023: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2675157)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100113 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS12-023)).
Applying the patch MS12-023 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12231.
