A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple QuickTime up to 7.7.1 (Multimedia Player Software). This issue affects an unknown function. Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in Apple QuickTime before 7.7.2 on Windows allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted TeXML file.
The bug was discovered 05/15/2012. The weakness was released 05/15/2012 by Alexander Gavrun with Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) as APPLE-SA-2012-05-15-1 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.apple.com. The public release was coordinated with Apple. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0663 since 01/12/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 802795 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
