Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apple QuickTime up to 7.7.1 (Multimedia Player Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality. The manipulation as part of a File leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Apple QuickTime before 7.7.2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted .pict file.
The weakness was shared 05/15/2012 by Rodrigo Rubira Branco (BSDaemon) with Qualys Vulnerability & Malware Research Labs as APPLE-SA-2012-05-15-1 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.apple.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-0671 since 01/12/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at archives.neohapsis.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62214 (Mac OS X 10.7.x < 10.7.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities (BEAST)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120221 (Apple QuickTime Prior to 7.7.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-05-15-1)).
Upgrading to version 7.7.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12701.
