A vulnerability was found in Apple iTunes up to 12.2 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown functionality. The weakness was presented 09/16/2015 by John Villamil with Yahoo Pentest Team as HT205221 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-5874 since 08/06/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:
Multiple memory corruption issues existed in the processing of text files. These issues were addressed through improved memory handling.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86001 (Apple iTunes < 12.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124144 (Apple iTunes Prior to 12.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2015-09-16-3)).
Upgrading to version 12.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
