Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Google Chrome 24.0.1312.71 (Web Browser). This issue affects the function CopyDirectory of the file file_util_posix.cc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Google Chrome before 25.0.1364.97 on Linux, and before 25.0.1364.99 on Mac OS X, does not properly handle pathnames during copy operations, which might make it easier for remote attackers to execute arbitrary programs via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was published 02/21/2013 by Jüri Aedla (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security as 167840 as confirmed posting (Website). The advisory is shared at code.google.com. The public release has been coordinated with Google. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-0895 since 01/07/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64859 (FreeBSD : chromium -- multiple vulnerabilities (dfd92cb2-7d48-11e2-ad48-00262d5ed8ee)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165877 (SUSE Security Update for Chromium: Updated to 27.0.1425 (openSUSE-SU-2013:0454-1)).
Upgrading to version 25.0.1364.97 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
