The CFNetwork Cookies component in Apple iOS before 9 allows remote attackers to track users via vectors involving a cookie for a top-level domain.
The weakness was disclosed 09/23/2015 by Xiaofeng Zheng (beist) as HT205213 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-5885 since 08/06/2015. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592. The advisory points out:
A cross-domain cookie issue existed in the handling of top level domains. The issue was addressed through improved restrictions of cookie creation.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370192 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-09-30-3)).
Upgrading to version 2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
