Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Apple Watch up to 1.0.2 (Smartwatch Operating System). This affects an unknown functionality of the component CFNetwork. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
CFNetwork in Apple iOS before 9 relies on the hardware UID for its cache encryption key, which makes it easier for physically proximate attackers to obtain sensitive information by obtaining this UID.
The weakness was presented 09/23/2015 by Andreas Kurtz (beist) with NESO Security Labs as HT205213 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-5898 since 08/06/2015. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue. The advisory points out:
Cache data was encrypted with a key protected only by the hardware UID. This issue was addressed by encrypting the cache data with a key protected by the hardware UID and the user's passcode.
Upgrading to version 2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at SecurityFocus (BID 76764†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-52864†). See VDB-9015, VDB-68413, VDB-77828 and VDB-77762 for similar entries. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
