A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 8 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function CTreeNode. Use-after-free vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted web site that triggers access to a deleted object, aka "Internet Explorer CTreeNode Use After Free Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 03/12/2013 by Gen Chen and Qihoo 360 Security Center with VenusTech & Qihoo 360 Security Center as MS13-021 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-1288 since 01/12/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65210 (MS13-021: Security Update for Internet Explorer (2809289)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100142 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS13-021)).
Applying the patch MS13-021 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12845.
