A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/7/8/9/10 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function removeChild. Use-after-free vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 through 10 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted web site that triggers access to a deleted object, aka "Internet Explorer removeChild Use After Free Vulnerability."
The weakness was released 03/12/2013 by Simon Zuckerbraun with Zero Day Initiative as MS13-021 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-0094 since 11/27/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65210 (MS13-021: Security Update for Internet Explorer (2809289)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100142 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS13-021)).
Applying the patch MS13-021 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12824.
