Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Adobe Acrobat Reader 11.0.02 (Document Reader Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component Sandbox. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Unspecified vulnerability in Adobe Reader 11.0.02 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors related to a "break into the sandbox," as demonstrated by George Hotz during a Pwn2Own competition at CanSecWest 2013.
The weakness was shared 03/06/2013 by George Hotz as not defined wargames (pwn2own) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared for download at twitter.com. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-2549 since 03/10/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
A private exploit has been developed by George Hotz. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75008 (openSUSE Security Update : acroread (openSUSE-SU-2013:0990-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121176 (Adobe Reader and Acrobat Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB13-15)).
Upgrading to version 11.0.03 eliminates this vulnerability. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Foxit Reader as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12856.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82779), Tenable (75008), SecurityFocus (BID 58398†), OSVDB (91202†) and Secunia (SA53420†).
