A vulnerability has been found in LibTIFF libtiff5.tif (Image Processing Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function NeXTDecode of the file tif_next.c of the component TIFF Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The NeXTDecode function in tif_next.c in LibTIFF allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds write) via a crafted TIFF image, as demonstrated by libtiff5.tif.
The weakness was presented 04/13/2016 by Salvatore Bonaccorso (Website). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-8784 since 01/23/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88491 (Debian DLA-405-1 : tiff security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196437 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Tiff Vulnerabilities (USN-2939-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
