Details
A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick up to 6.9.3/7.0.1-1 (Image Processing Software) and classified as very critical. This issue affects the function DrawDashPolygon of the file MagickCore/draw.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The DrawDashPolygon function in MagickCore/draw.c in ImageMagick before 6.9.4-0 and 7.x before 7.0.1-2 mishandles calculations of certain vertices integer data, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (buffer overflow and application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted file.
The weakness was disclosed 06/04/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-4562 since 05/06/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/22/2022).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 93115 (Debian DSA-3652-1 : imagemagick - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175817 (Debian Security Update for imagemagick (DSA 3652-1)).
Upgrading to version 6.9.4-0 or 7.0.1-2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (93115). The entries VDB-3330, VDB-3331, VDB-3332 and VDB-24228 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
