Details
A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick up to 6.9.3/7.0.1-1 (Image Processing Software). It has been classified as very critical. Affected is the function TraceStrokePolygon of the file MagickCore/draw.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The TraceStrokePolygon function in MagickCore/draw.c in ImageMagick before 6.9.4-0 and 7.x before 7.0.1-2 mishandles the relationship between the BezierQuantum value and certain strokes data, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (buffer overflow and application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted file.
The weakness was presented 06/04/2016 (Website). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-4563 since 05/06/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/22/2022).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 93115 (Debian DSA-3652-1 : imagemagick - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175817 (Debian Security Update for imagemagick (DSA 3652-1)).
Upgrading to version 6.9.4-0 or 7.0.1-2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
