A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 1.8.5 (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the file dissectors/packet-reload.c of the component GTPv2 Dissector. The manipulation as part of a Packet leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The dissect_diagnosticrequest function in epan/dissectors/packet-reload.c in the REsource LOcation And Discovery (aka RELOAD) dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.6 uses an incorrect integer data type, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via crafted integer values in a packet.

The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-2486 since 03/06/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75017 (openSUSE Security Update : wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2013:0947-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166474 (OpenSuSE Security Update for wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2013:0911-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.8.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
