Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.7 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function audit_log_single_execve_arg of the file kernel/auditsc.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Race condition in the audit_log_single_execve_arg function in kernel/auditsc.c in the Linux kernel through 4.7 allows local users to bypass intended character-set restrictions or disrupt system-call auditing by changing a certain string, aka a "double fetch" vulnerability.
The weakness was presented 08/06/2016 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-6136 since 07/01/2016. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 101427 (Virtuozzo 6 : kernel / kernel-abi-whitelists / kernel-debug / etc (VZLSA-2017-0307)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Virtuozzo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157314 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for kernel (ELSA-2016-2574)-Deprecated).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 8 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
