Details
A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick up to 6.9.4-4/7.0.1-6 (Image Processing Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function ReadDCMImage of the component DCM Reader. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The ReadDCMImage function in DCM reader in ImageMagick before 6.9.4-5 and 7.x before 7.0.1-7 allows remote attackers to have unspecified impact via vectors involving the for statement in computing the pixel scaling table.
The bug was discovered 06/17/2016. The weakness was presented 12/13/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-5690 since 06/16/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 69 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 93115 (Debian DSA-3652-1 : imagemagick - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175817 (Debian Security Update for imagemagick (DSA 3652-1)).
Upgrading to version 6.9.4-5 or 7.0.1-7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
