Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in ImageMagick up to 6.9.4-4/7.0.1-6 (Image Processing Software). This affects some unknown processing of the component DCM Reader. The manipulation of the argument pixel.red/pixel.green/pixel.blue with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The DCM reader in ImageMagick before 6.9.4-5 and 7.x before 7.0.1-7 allows remote attackers to have unspecified impact by leveraging lack of validation of (1) pixel.red, (2) pixel.green, and (3) pixel.blue.
The bug was discovered 06/17/2016. The weakness was shared 12/13/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-5691 since 06/16/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 69 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 93115 (Debian DSA-3652-1 : imagemagick - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175817 (Debian Security Update for imagemagick (DSA 3652-1)).
Upgrading to version 6.9.4-5 or 7.0.1-7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (93115) and SecurityFocus (BID 91283†). The entries VDB-80763, VDB-87737, VDB-87738 and VDB-87739 are related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
