A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 8 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code. Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted web site, aka "Internet Explorer Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The weakness was shared 07/09/2013 by Scott Bell with Security-Assessment.com as ms13-jul as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-3164 since 04/17/2013. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67212 (MS13-055: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2846071)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100157 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS13-055)).
Applying the patch MS13-JUL is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13040.
