Details
A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick (Image Processing Software) (version unknown). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown function of the component Convert Utility. The manipulation as part of a TIFF Image leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
An exploitable out of bounds write exists in the handling of compressed TIFF images in ImageMagicks's convert utility. A crafted TIFF document can lead to an out of bounds write which in particular circumstances could be leveraged into remote code execution. The vulnerability can be triggered through any user controlled TIFF that is handled by this functionality.
The bug was discovered 12/03/2016. The weakness was presented 12/23/2016 by Tyler Bohan with Cisco Talos (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-8707 since 10/17/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 19 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96133 (openSUSE Security Update : ImageMagick (openSUSE-2016-1512)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169455 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for ImageMagick (SUSE-SU-2016:3256-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (96133) and SecurityFocus (BID 94727†). See VDB-97012, VDB-97054, VDB-97405 and VDB-98463 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
