A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick 7.0.3.8 (Image Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function IsPixelGray of the file MagickCore/pixel-accessor.h of the component Fix CVE-2016-9556. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. Heap-based buffer overflow in the IsPixelGray function in MagickCore/pixel-accessor.h in ImageMagick 7.0.3.8 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds heap read) via a crafted image file. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2016-9556.
The bug was discovered 12/05/2016. The weakness was shared 02/17/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-9773 since 12/02/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
