Details
A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick up to 7.0.3.6 (Image Processing Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function TIFFGetProperties of the file coders/tiff.c of the component Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
coders/tiff.c in ImageMagick before 7.0.3.7 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and crash) via a crafted image.
The bug was discovered 12/01/2016. The weakness was published 03/01/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-9559 since 11/22/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95719 (ImageMagick 6.x < 6.9.6-5 TIFFGetProperties() NULL Pointer Dereference DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169455 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for ImageMagick (SUSE-SU-2016:3256-1)).
Upgrading to version 7.0.3.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
