LibTIFF 4.0.6 TIFFFetchNormalTag TIFF_SETGET_C16ASCII/TIFF_SETGET_C32_ASCII null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in LibTIFF 4.0.6. The affected element is the function TIFFFetchNormalTag. This manipulation of the argument TIFF_SETGET_C16ASCII/TIFF_SETGET_C32_ASCII causes null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-9448. The attack can be initiated remotely. There is not any exploit available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in LibTIFF 4.0.6 (Image Processing Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function TIFFFetchNormalTag. The manipulation of the argument TIFF_SETGET_C16ASCII/TIFF_SETGET_C32_ASCII with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

The TIFFFetchNormalTag function in LibTiff 4.0.6 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and crash) by setting the tags TIFF_SETGET_C16ASCII or TIFF_SETGET_C32_ASCII to values that access 0-byte arrays. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2016-9297.

The bug was discovered 11/11/2016. The weakness was released 01/27/2017 by Henri Salo (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.maptools.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-9448 since 11/18/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 26 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95649 (openSUSE Security Update : tiff (openSUSE-2016-1425)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169468 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for tiff (SUSE-SU-2016:3301-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (95649) and SecurityFocus (BID 94420†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-81885, VDB-92312, VDB-95086 and VDB-95523.
