A vulnerability was found in LibTIFF (Image Processing Software) (the affected version unknown). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function t2p_readwrite_pdf_image_tile. The manipulation of the argument TIFFTAG_JPEGTABLES with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-787. The t2p_readwrite_pdf_image_tile function in LibTIFF allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds write and crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a JPEG file with a TIFFTAG_JPEGTABLES of length one.
The bug was discovered 11/11/2016. The weakness was disclosed 01/27/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.maptools.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-9453 since 11/18/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 26 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95649 (openSUSE Security Update : tiff (openSUSE-2016-1425)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169468 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for tiff (SUSE-SU-2016:3301-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
