A vulnerability was found in Artifex Ghostscript (Document Processing Software) (version unknown). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function pdf14_pop_transparency_group of the file base/gdevp14.c of the component PDF Transparency Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. The pdf14_pop_transparency_group function in base/gdevp14.c in the PDF Transparency module in Artifex Software, Inc. Ghostscript 9.20 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and application crash) via a crafted file.
The bug was discovered 12/19/2016. The weakness was disclosed 04/03/2017 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.ghostscript.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-10218 since 02/09/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
